IMO – why you haven’t gotten results

I talk personally with people every single day who are looking to:

– Start a new fitness program
– Lose fat
– Gain muscle
– Improve overall health

Some are currently doing some kind of workouts, some are just getting back into things …

… but ultimately, one way or the other, they aren’t getting the results they want … otherwise they wouldn’t be seeking my help! 🙂

Now, more than ever, there is an ABUNDANCE of information every topic you can think of readily available. Including health and fitness. So lack of information is NOT the issue.

I think that:

1 – Having a strong reason WHY you want to make changes (a lot of people never really think about it. The questionnaire for the 28 Day Kettlebell Body Revival Challenge we have kicking off Monday, February 5th is intended to make you get really clear on this. I suggest if you are even remotely interested, you take this time to fill it out, even if for this reason alone => http://bit.ly/kbbodyrevival2)

2 – Having a plan that is SPECIFIC to those goals (with so much information out there, it can be tough to know WHAT to implement, and what not to! – that’s why you need professional advice and help)

3 – Having accountability and a strong social support network to KEEP you on track and to help you KEEP working, ’till you get where you want to go (this is built in to a program like the 28 Day Kettlebell Body Revival Challenge)

IMO, these are the big 3 reasons why people don’t end up getting the results they are looking for.

So advice for today is, if you want to reach your goals, get these three things in order.

This is simple, yet highly powerful.

Put it into action, and I think you will be surprised at the results!

PPS – I just got back from a GREAT day at the Perform Better one day event in San Francisco.

We heard from Lee Burton on the importance of client screening for best results … from Charlie Weingroff on some revolutionary concepts in energy system training … from Martin Rooney on how to inspire your clients with both heart AND smarts … and from Todd Durkin CONTAGIASM! …

… maybe I’ll do a future post with some more detailed take-aways from the event.

But I honestly think the biggest take-away was what I touched on in today’s article! – that there are actually MANY valid approaches that work GREAT, but that it’s about having that strong reason why, having an intelligent plan to get there, and having the support to keep going, that gets you results in the end.

Best Stretch for Tight Hips?

Kettlebell lifting, and other hard training, can lead to tight hips.

Spend the day sitting, and the problem quickly becomes worse.

Enter the “Couch Stretch”.

Dr. Kelly Starrett invented – or at least recently popularized – this awesome move.

It’s one of the best stretches for tight hips.

And maybe the best part – you can get it done while you’re watching your favorite TV show! 🙂

THE COUCH STRETCH

– Start by standing in front of a couch
– Put your back knee on the couch and keep your front leg on the ground
– Put your back foot up against the back of the couch
– Point the back toe
– Squeeze your glutes, and the glute of the up leg in particular, to stabilize your lower back and correctly position the hip joint
– With the butt squeezed, dril the front of the hip towards the ground
– Work on this daily for at least 60 seconds per side

Try doing the Couch Stretch daily for a week – 60 seconds each leg, each day – and pay attention to the change you can create.

REGENERATE is a simple recovery program, designed specifically for lifters and athletes.

It is a combination of yoga poses, static stretches, core exercises and more combined into simple sequences that take 3 to 6 minutes to do, that require no special equipment.

Not to mention, they will also help you reduce chronic pain, improve mobility / flexibility, and feel amazing!

Simple recovery for lifters and athletes

(6 min sample sequence) REGENERATE – Simple Recovery for Lifters and Athletes

If you are like me, you like to train hard. You push yourself to your limit, on a regular basis.

But because of this, you also get sore, and even end up with tweaks and injuries from time to time.

These nagging aches and pains and injuries get in the way of your workouts, and your life.

The solution that I have come up with personally, for my training clients, and now that I am codifying into a program, I am calling:

REGENERATE – Simple Recovery for Lifters and Athletes

It is a combination of yoga poses, static stretches, core exercises and more combined into simple sequences that take 3 to 6 minutes to do, that require no special equipment.

I am putting the finishing touches on the program, and it will be available later this week.

In the meantime, here is a sample:

#

REGENERATE – Simple Recovery for Lifters and Athletes – Sequence 1

Do this sequence either immediately after, OR within 48 hours of, a big HIP HINGING day (lots of KB swings, deadlifts, etc).

Hold each stretch / pose for 60 seconds:

– Pigeon (60 seconds per side) – https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=pigeon+pose
– Doorway Hamstring Stretch (60 seconds per side) – https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=doorway+hamstring+stretch
– Seated Spinal Twist (60 seconds per side) – https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=seated+spinal+twist+pose

#

REGENERATE – Simple Recovery for Lifters and Athletes – Sequence 1 is specifically engineered to hit your hamstrings and hips – muscles you hit hard during that KB swing, or deadlift workout.

The full REGENERATE – Simple Recovery for Lifters and Athletes program is a series of sequences like these, designed help you recover from specific workouts. For example, there are sequences to help you recover from:

– A big pull up day
– Running
– Jump rope
– A big overhead pressing day

And more.

If you are like me, the reality of the situtaion is that you know you NEED to do more work on this stuff, but you don’t have a ton of time to dedicate to it. So that’s why these sequences only take 3 to 6 minutes to do.

Not to mention, they will also help you reduce chronic pain, improve mobility / flexibility, and feel amazing!

This is a revolutionary program, and I firmly believe that every person reading this message needs it, and should get it. So stay tuned – it will be available very soon.

“Catabolic Sleep” is killing your GAINZ (and what to do about it!)

We are always on the lookout for the newest workout, diet, and supplement regime that will help us shed fat and add lean muscle.

But one thing we often forget is that your body is PRIMED for building muscle during sleep.

If you are not sleeping well, much of your workout efforts could actually be wasted.

Because, during sleep, the repairing of muscle and other tissues occurs, as well as the replacement of aging or dead cells.

Your hormone levels are also impacted BIG time during sleep.

Here are some signs you might not be getting enough:

– You hit the snooze button on your alarm at least once every morning. Regardless, you wake up tired, sluggish, and unmotivated despite going to bed at a decent hour most nights
– You try losing body fat … yet each morning you’re heavier on the scale or stuck at the same weight as the day before despite eating healthy and exercising
– You struggle to focus at your job and get passed up for promotions and bonuses by the “young bucks” in your workplace
– You experience inconsistent energy swings throughout the day and take naps during the week
– You wake up in the middle of the night or have trouble falling asleep within the first five minutes of closing your eyes in bed

So what to do about it?

Here are a few basic tips to start:

– Avoid alchohol and caffeine at night
– Set up a correct sleeping enviornment
– Train hard – but not so late in the day that it distrupts your sleep
– No screen time before bed – TV, phone, etc
– Do a “brain dump” – write down what you’re thinking about and worrying about before bed

If you are serious about improving your sleep, I also recommend you check out the “Anabolic Sleeping” protocol:

=> “Anabolic Sleeping” protocol

I will be back with more info on it later this week, but for now, click the link above to get all the details on this “overnight muscle building solution”.

Thanks, hope these tips help you improve your sleep, and stop killing your GAINZ!

Pre-KB Workout Warm Up Sequence

You may or may not be getting warmed up before your kettlebell workouts now.

But, it is very important that you do so.

Among other things, warming up properly will help you get mentally and physically ready for your training session, keep you injury free and actually improve your performance.

Pre-KB Workout Warm Up Sequence

— Start with getting some music going that you like and visualizing the session ahead

— Next do your soft tissue work. Hit areas that are specifically tight for YOU with a foam roll, lacrosse ball, etc.

— Do some kind of “cardio” — run in place, jumping jack, etc.

— The final segment is going to be some dynamic flexibility and muscle activation. Two great examples of this would be the reverse prisoner lunge and inchworms or walk outs.

Check out a video that walks you through this pre-KB workout warm up sequence here

If you found this helpful, be sure to check out the full PreHab Revolution program here

SO — now you have no excuse to skip your kettlebell warm up. Just a three to five minute time investment before your training session goes a long way.

That’s it for now — train hard, and talk soon –

— Are constantly battling injuries from hard training
— Live with a little – or a lot of! – chronic pain
— Want to move better and improve your workout performance

CORE KB Workshop – Pics, #1 Take-Away

The 1st CORE Kettlebell Workshop is a wrap!

It was SO fun – THANK YOU to the folks who came out – and I can’t wait to see how what we covered will be implemented now across the country, and so many people will benefit and change their lives!

We got some great video footage too, which will be released over the coming weeks and months, stay tuned.

This is the beginning of some BIG things for CORE Kettlebell!

So I have been thinking – what is the BIGGEST take-away that I can share with YOU, a loyal FVT Newsletter subscriber, that can help with your kettlebell practice?

There were SO many … but for now, based on what participants of the workshop shared with me, I’ll say it’s GET FEEDBACK.

All but one of the participants at the workshop were trainers themselves.

And one of the biggest points they had was that they so appreciated my feedback and critique on their exercise form. This is something that interestingly, many events I’ve attended as a fit pro leave out … but it’s probably the most important thing when it comes to getting results!

Because it’s not about adding endless different exercise variations to keep progressing …

Or about doing a different workout every single day …

It’s about doing the fundamentals, over and over, and GETTING REALLY GOOD AT THEM.

Get someone you trust to look at what you are doing, give you feedback, give you small tweaks, etc.

I have a online / distance KB Strong Challenge – opening registration tomorrow – where you can get feedback and coaching and tips from ME over the next few weeks (I’ll have more info coming on that in tomorrow’s message).

But it could be a (knowledgeable) workout partner, or a trainer / coach in your area.

Think about this take-away as you work towards your ultimate fitness goals, and do your very best to make it happen.

Getting feedback and constantly improving on the fundamentals is key to your continued progress and best possible results.

Talk soon, let’s make it a great week! –

How to Check Your Own Form During Kettlebell Training

Maybe you work out by yourself, but you want to check your form during kettlebell moves.

What to do?

Short of getting coached directly, the best tool for the job is taking video.

Thes days, almost everyone has a phone or other device capable of getting this done quickly and easily.

I’ve worked with distance coaching clients in North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia – and I’m able to review their technique and progress using this method.

A few tips to get the most out of it:

— When you are training by yourself, you want a set up stable enough for you to trust that it won’t fall over while you are lifting. You may need a mini tripod if that’s going to be difficult.

— Keep in mind that you probably won’t be able to get your full body in the shot, so decide what’s the most critical part, and position the camera so you will capture that.

— You can review your form during your training sessions, between sets, to correct as you go. You can also review after the fact if you want to sit down and do a more detailed anyalsis.

If you are going at this on your own, you’ll obviously have to know what you are looking for, in terms of what you are doing wrong, and what to correct. I would suggest going searching the blog archives on ForestVance.com, and reviewing the dozens of posts / videos I’ve done on how to various kettlebell exercises, and/or picking up a copy of one / all of the following courses of mine – Kettlebell Challenge Workouts, Top 13 Kettlebell Training Mistakes – and How to Fix Them!, the CORE Kettlebell System (do a search on ForestVance.com to find info on those).

If you want personal coaching / feedback from me, I am also opening up my distance KB coaching program during this coming week to new clients.

I only do this a few times each year – when spots open up, I only work with 10 clients at any given time – but I currently have a few openings.

Send me an email if you are interested in distance KB coaching with me, with ELITE KB COACHING in the subject line, and we’ll go from there.

To sum up, if you work out by yourself, but want to check your form during kettlebell moves, I suggest taking video.  It’s what I have all of my Elite Kettlebell Coaching clients do, and it works great. Just use the tips I outline in this article to get the most out of it.

Keep training hard, talk soon! –

The CORE Kettlebell Network is LIVE!

2.22.17 UPDATE –

In my excitement to get this program out and to the world, we released it too early.

We are having some technical issues with delivery of the program that need to be addressed before we accept paying customers.

Registrations are currently CLOSED for the CORE Kettlebell Network.

Sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused.

– Forest and the FVT Team

You’re either:

1 – a serious kettlebell lifter

or

2 – a trainer or coach

And one of the biggest problems you face on an on-going basis is consistent, quality programming.

Sure – you can throw together a workout, do it yourself or with your clients, and feel tired when it’s done ..

But how does it fit into the big picture?

AND, how much time and energy does it take you to do it? And know if you’re REALLY doing it the best way you could be?

At a recent even I held in Sacramento for trainers and coaches, one individual told me he spends HOURS – every day! – writing workouts for his clients.

What if he could cut that down, and spend the time either working with additional clients (and making more money), and/or spending time with his family and friends, or just doing whatever else he wants to?

OR – if you’re a serious kettlebell fan, and are looking to take your kettlebell workouts to the next level – you’re probably just picking workouts for the day or week, and doing them. They feel tiring, and you feel like you’re making progress in the short term – but you’re eventually going to stop making progress (if you haven’t already), start incurring little injuries, and more.

Well – if high-quality, kettlebell-based, total body workouts designed to help you build lean muscle and lose bodyfat are what you’re after .. I now have you covered with the CORE Kettlebell Network (CKBN).

CKBN is my new program where I write all of your workouts for you. You get them delivered to you at the start of each week. Trainers can use the workouts with their clients. Serious lifters can do the workouts themselves.

And everyone in the program gets access to the CORE Kettlebell Network Private Facebook Group, where you can ask questions, get feedback on your training form, and so much more.

It’s as close as you get can get to being at FVT and training with me on an on-going basis – without actually being here :)

The program and group will evolve and improve over time as we build the member base and see what people want – and we will add elements to the program if / as needed.

But for now – the CORE of the program is the workouts and the coaching, and that’s the main focus.

Now the format of this program allows us to make it more affordable. The cost is $30 per month to start. A fraction of the cost of my other coaching programs. I’ve mentioned this recently – but my lifetime goal is to help 5 million people experience improved fitness and a better life through the power of fitness – and I think this is step in the direction of making this happen.

Here’s how it works moving forward:

1 – Click the link below and fill out the intake form – including your name, phone number, email address, fitness goals, and medical history

2 – On the next page, you’ll be taken to the payment form. Again, the cost for the program is $30 / month. Month-to-month, no long-term commitment.

3 – Immediately on signing up, you’ll get a confirmation email – and you’ll be IN! The program will be delivered via email on a weekly basis. The first workout will be delivered on Sunday, February 26th – and then every Sunday, every week, moving forward. There will also be a link to the private Facebook group where you can get access to me and the rest of the community for questions, coaching, and anything / everything else.

SORRY! – REGISTRATION FOR THIS PROGRAM IS CURRENTLY CLOSED.

Look forward to working with you!
